Florida Property Taxes by the Numbers

The following numbers are a breakdown of important dates and statistics for property taxpayers in Florida.  Taxpayers can take this information into consideration when deciding whether to appeal their property taxes each year.

.83% is the average effective property tax rate in Florida, lower than the national average of 1.08%

South Florida average county tax rates are more in line with national average with 0.97% for Miami-Dade, 1.07% for Broward County and for 1.06% Palm Beach County 

$2,035 is the average property tax bill in the state of Florida, which is about $500 cheaper than the national median

In Florida, there is a homestead exemption of up to $50,000 for those under age 65.  Those over 65 with limited income may get an additional $50,000 in homestead exemptions.

Each year around 20% of those appealing their property taxes without a lawyer win their appeals and pay lower property taxes.   

Those with a lawyer are more likely to win their appeal, with up to 40% paying lower property taxes

TRIM notices go out in late July and early August depending on your Florida county.  You have around 45 days to make an appeal with most deadlines in mid-September.
